Think combination, not perfection

A practical breakfast combines an energy source with protein and, when possible, fruit or vegetables. Whole-grain toast with egg, yogurt with oats and berries, or cheese with bread and cucumber are all useful starting points.

This mix is often more satisfying than a sweet item on its own and gives children a wider range of nutrients before lessons begin.

Plan for real mornings

Busy families need options at different speeds. Keep a sit-down choice for calm mornings, a five-minute choice such as yogurt and fruit, and a portable backup such as a simple egg or cheese sandwich.

A little preparation changes everything

Set out bowls, bottles and shelf-stable items the night before. Boil eggs, portion yogurt toppings or prepare sandwich fillings in advance. Removing one morning decision can make breakfast much more consistent.
